Learn About The New: Daufuskie Island Day Trips! (Day trips with Full Packages from Savannah to Daufuskie Island Weekly!)

Exploring Daufuskie Island

Those seeking fast pace or flashy nightclubs won't find them on Daufuskie. Unlike the hustle and bustle of destinations nearby such as the busy Myrtle Beach Resorts area, here in Daufuskie, things are laid back and the outdoors is king. Walking, biking, swimming, golf, fishing, horseback riding, and strolls on the beach are the most exciting things Daufuskie Island has to offer. To some, Daufuskie Island offers a wealth of activity and fun for children and adults of all ages. To others the natural beauty, serenity and tranquil scenery offers the perfect island escape. Take a golf cart ride along sandy roads that pass under Spanish moss hanging from oak and palmetto trees. A true "departure from civilization."

Another favorite stop amongst locals and tourists is the "Silver Dew Pottery" owned by Bob and Emily Burn. Bob Burn, son of Billie Burn, is a self taught potter and established the Silver Dew in 1996. Bob's creations include intricately designed fish platters, oyster dishes, coffee mugs and serving bowls - all made with Daufuskie Island sand. All of Bob's products are exclusively created and sold only on Daufuskie Island. You can visit Silver Dew Pottery and watch Bob sitting on his wheel working on his next creation!

The Historic First Union African Baptist Church If you are looking for a truly traditional church setting for your special day, Daufuskie Island offers a traditional venue in the historic district of the island. The Historic First Union African Baptist Church was built in 1881. The locals of the island love this church with its rich history. The church was recently restored with grant money raised by the islanders. The church seats 150 and welcomes denominations of all types. The church is the oldest building on Daufuskie Island. Your wedding consultant will assist you with all of the arrangements, including transportation to the church from the resort.

You just can’t visit Daufuskie Island without dropping by the Iron Fish Gallery and Studio to see acclaimed metal sculptor Chase Allen and his latest collection.

Combining welding, blacksmithing and self-invented techniques, Chase creates signature art pieces that capture the beauty of island life. His front porch is his gallery. His backyard is his studio. And his colorful, rustic sculptures are true collector's items.

Watch the artist as he welds and sculpts under the shade of a moss-draped oak. Pick up a limited-edition iron fish or mermaid as a memento of your trip. If Chase is gone fishing, just drop your payment in the "honor box" on the porch of his historic Gullah cottage.

Chase Allen and his work were featured in the April 2006 issue of Coastal Living Magazine. He is one of the most sought-out members of the thriving Daufuskie Island art community.

Visit Chase at 168 Benjies Point Road or online at at www.ironfishart.com.

Additional points of interest include the Mary Dunn Cemetery, established in 1790, and considered one of the oldest cemeteries in the south. The historic cemetery was one of the first white burial grounds on the island and has tombstones dating back to the 1700's and as recent as 1993.

When Pat Conroy wrote "The Water is Wide," in the late 1960's, he described Daufuskie Island as a lazy place of sand roads, live oaks, and wild black water swamps, accessible only by boat with a scattered population of less than 100 people. The book reflects upon the year he taught at The Mary Field School on the island. The Mary Field School is still standing, from this famous story and was once the oldest operating school in South Carolina. The school is now used as a community center.
